A reusable straw makes upright sipping easy. Cleaning it takes more than running water over the outside. Wash a removable reusable straw with warm water, mild dish soap and a correctly sized straw brush, then rinse through its full length and let it dry separately. Also clean the accessible connection where the straw meets the lid.
The crucial word is “removable.” Follow the manufacturer’s disassembly instructions. Some mouthpieces and silicone spouts are fixed, even when the lower straw comes out. Pulling every soft component free can damage the lid rather than improve hygiene.
Choose tools that fit the straw
A narrow brush needs to reach the inside without being forced through. Check both diameter and length. Bristles should make contact, while the handle should remain easy to control. If a brush cannot reach the complete straw, choose an appropriate longer tool or follow the manufacturer’s alternative cleaning method.
For the bottle body, use a separate soft bottle brush. For accessible lid openings, a small detail brush may help if it does not damage the mechanism. Keep your cleaning tools clean and allow them to dry as well. A worn, dirty brush is not a useful addition to the routine.
Identify what actually comes apart
Read the diagram for your exact model. A straight straw in a tumbler may lift out easily, while an internal straw in a bottle may detach downward from a lid connector. A valve, spout cover or mouthpiece may have different instructions.
For example, the Contigo Ashland 2.0 leaflet distinguishes the removable straw from the non-removable silicone spout. That is a reason to clean the straw and accessible spout correctly, not a reason to twist or pull the fixed part harder. Do not use a repair video for a different generation as your disassembly guide.
A full cleaning sequence
- Empty the drink and place the lid on a clean surface. Detach the straw as directed.
- Wash the straw’s exterior with warm water and mild soap.
- Work a suitable straw brush through the interior without forcing the wire or handle against the material.
- Clean the accessible lid connector and drinking opening using the permitted method.
- Rinse through the straw until the cleaning solution is gone. Rinse the lid and body separately.
- Shake off loose water and leave the components apart until completely dry.
- Reconnect the straw as instructed and check normal operation before filling.
If a removable connector separates as part of the official cleaning process, keep it in a small clean bowl so it is not lost in the sink. Do not add improvised parts during reassembly. A shortened straw, loose connection or damaged seal can affect the drinking path.

The connection is an easy place to miss
People often brush the straight straw but ignore the junction under the lid. Look for visible residue around the socket and the accessible underside. Clean the parts that are designed to be reached; do not push sharp tools into a sealed mechanism.
After reassembly, check that the straw is secure and the lid closes as expected. If you suddenly need excessive suction, air enters unexpectedly or the connection repeatedly loosens, inspect the fitting and consult the manufacturer. More force during cleaning is not a fix for a broken connector.
Does the dishwasher replace brushing?
Only dishwasher-approved components belong in the machine, in the placement prescribed by their instructions. A long narrow tube may still have visible residue after a cycle, so inspect it rather than assuming the outside’s clean appearance tells you everything.
Some leaflets specify a utensil basket for the straw and a top rack for the lid; others give different instructions. Secure small pieces so they cannot fall toward a heating element. Do not apply the body’s rating to the straw or the lid automatically.
Your drink changes the cleanup
Plain water still calls for regular cleaning. Sweetened drinks, milk-based drinks and thicker liquids can leave more noticeable residue, but first confirm whether the product permits those drinks at all. A bottle restricted against pulpy beverages should not be used for a smoothie because the opening seems large enough.
Clean promptly after permitted drinks that leave residue. Do not leave a straw sitting in yesterday’s contents and add fresh liquid. A rinse during the day is useful for loose residue, but it does not replace the full wash, inspection and drying.
Straw designs in the Tumbler Den range
The bubba Envy S 24 oz has an upright straw-tumbler format. Its straw and accessible opening should be part of the same routine as the body. The Contigo Streeterville 30 oz offers another handled tumbler arrangement; follow its exact lid instructions.
For a closed bottle with an internal straw, look at the Ashland 2.0 32 oz or the bubba Trailblazer 40 oz. Their drinking paths differ from a straight exposed tumbler straw. Choose a format you are willing to maintain, not just a favourite colour.
When to replace or ask for support
Stop using a straw with splits, sharp damage, persistent inaccessible buildup or deterioration. Replace it with a confirmed compatible component where available. Do not assume a generic straw has the correct length, diameter or fit for a pressurized or valved lid.
If the fixed mouthpiece cannot be adequately cleaned or is damaged, ask support about the complete lid. Do not cut a valve, enlarge a hole or glue a connection. Refer to our lid and gasket replacement guide for assessing other components.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean a straw without a brush?
Use the manufacturer’s approved alternative if one is provided. If residue remains, obtain an appropriate tool or ask support rather than relying on a quick rinse.
Can I boil a plastic straw?
Only if the exact product instructions explicitly permit it. Dishwasher approval is not permission to boil.
Should the straw stay in the bottle while drying?
Dry removable components separately as directed. A closed, damp drinking path is harder to inspect and dry.
What if black marks remain?
Do not diagnose them by colour alone or keep using an inadequately cleaned part. Follow approved cleaning and seek advice about persistent marks.
